Hello, {{ Fname | reader }}!

👋 Welcome to this Friday’s edition of The 8:01 👋

After a bit of a break over the Christmas and New Year period, we are back with our regular format.

It’s been a very cold start to the week and Storm Goretti is causing problems at the end of this week, so we hope that everyone is staying safe and warm.

For many of us, it was a return back to the office, and asking the question, “can we still say Happy New Year?”

Thanks for taking the time to read this, hope you enjoy!

A lot of us have probably already seen this, but it was interesting to see Chislehurst named as one of the top places to live in London. Coming in at sixth place, just behind Dulwich, it’s believed that a combination of green countryside, open spaces historic pubs, local amenities and good transport links makes it a great place to live. Certainly when I moved out from east London, it was the combination of a quick train ride back to the city, yet being on the edge of some fantastic nature, was a big appeal. It was also good to see one of The 8:01’s favourite spots, The Imperial Arms mentioned in the article.

We also saw a very cold start to the week in the area, with a flurry of snow which seemed to take an age to melt away as it essentially became ice.

Black Sheep Coffee, Various Locations

Black Sheep Coffee are a national chain, but they have a good number of locations in London and the City. I’ve always liked the fact they remain a little under the radar for most people. They’re not as big as the mega chains like Starbucks, Cost or Nero, but they are also more straightforward than some of the small independents who can be a bit trendy. Prices are on point, and I always find them to be that bit quieter so you can actually take a moment to pause, and enjoy your drink. As an example, the photo below was taken at 8:45 am on Tuesday morning, very close to Moorgate tube. There was also no one behind me. So nice and quiet if that’s more your thing.

Volunteers Needed at the Scouts

Chislehurst Invicta scout group are making an appeal for volunteers to help run the group. Without some new assistance, especially for the Cubs section, there is a real danger the group might fold. So if you are interested, and can spare the time, please do get in touch with them.

If you want to help look after the local area and enjoy getting out in some nature, then the Friends of Chislehurst Rec are always welcoming new members for their Gardening Club. Taking place each Wednesday and meet at 10:00 am by the Scout’s compound.

🚂 The Commute 🚂

Once again I overhead a conversation on the train with people discussing how frequently they now have to go into the office. One person in the conversation mentioned they were now required in 5 days a week, which for many office workers seems extreme these days. The only upside to this, is our relatively quick journey time into the city, but still, I’m sure most of us would be happier with just a couple of days. In makes you wonder how this impacts some of our local businesses who know doubt have benefited from more of working from home. Our coffee shops, pubs and other amenities must benefit from having more people stay in the area on workdays.
