Chislehurst Wine

I saw a post on Instagram this week that reminded me that we have a relatively new vineyard in Chislehurst at Home Farm. 10-15 years ago, that would have been a strange thing to say, but with climate change as it is, we have quite the growing wine industry in the UK.

I’ve dug into some numbers. As of 2023, the UK surpassed the milestone of 1,000 registered vineyards, with 87 new vineyards added in that year alone, bringing the total to 1,030. The number of wineries has also increased from 209 to 221 over the past decade. Kent is a central hub for English wine, accounting for 1,033 hectares under vine or about 26% of the country's total plantings.

According to the Home Farm website, they won’t directly be producing their own wine but will work with a London-based wine producer to create a truly ‘London’ product.

Industry forecasts predict the total area under vine in Great Britain will double to 7,600 hectares by 2032, with production expected to reach 25–29 million bottles annually by that time and it will be fascinating to see what part Chislehurst and Home Farm has to play.

In Town

It took me a long time to discover The Ship and Shovel pub despite traveling through Charing Cross for many, many years. It was only when a friend working above at PwC to suggest meeting there for me to learn of it.

What’s quite interesting about the Ship and Shovel is pretty obvious as soon as you get there. The pub is uniquely situated across both sides of the alley, where it’s understood these were once two separate venues, The Ship and The Shovel. It was in 1998 that they were rumoured to be connected by an underground passage between them.

It’s now a favourite spot to meet when I’m in the area and I particularly like bringing any friends or colleagues over from the US here as they always seem to feel it’s very typical of London.
