Hello, {{ Fname | reader }}!

Welcome to this Friday’s edition of The 8:01

This week we cover:

  • Potential change to pub licensing hours

  • Poutine and Sport at the Maple Leaf

  • Petition to save the Chartwell Impatient Unit at the PRUH

  • A locally inspired murder mystery

In a bid to promote economic growth, one of the government’s latest ideas is to relax the current pub licensing laws. On the one hand, this might be great for the city’s nightlife for those that want, and can afford, to drink into the wee hours, but it posses a challenge for us in residential areas. Whilst I’m sure many of us enjoy and use our local pubs and restaurants, we would also hope for a balanced approach to any updating of trading hours that could cause unwanted behaviour.

In Town

The Maple Leaf, Maiden Lane

This Green King venue is a regular spot for me when meeting up with friends to watch a game. With 14 individual screens showing various sports, it’s a great place to watch a game. Plus, being a Canadian themed pub, you can also get your fix of poutine. There’s even some outdoor seating should the weather be playing ball.

At Home

Cancer will touch many of our lives, and it’s vitally important that we have access to local, medical support, for ourselves, and our loved ones. Unfortunately though, the Chartwell Inpatient Unit at the PRUH is under threat of closure. There’s a current online petition that you can add your support which has gained more than 20,000 signatures in just two weeks.

The Commute

It’s been over 10 years since I had to take the DLR to work, but if you need to head towards Canary Wharf, you might have taken the DLR more recently than me. If so, you might be pleased to hear that the long awaited new trains are on their way. They’ll still be ‘driverless’ but now they feature walk-through carriages amongst other benefits.

Heard on the Platform

Chislehurst local Shani Denman has penned a fantastic crime novel inspired by our very own village.. Set in the fictional town of Kingshurst, where a murder shakes an otherwise peaceful community, the story unfolds with wit and charm as suspicion settles over the Common. You can find it on Amazon.
