Hello, {{ Fname | reader }}!
Welcome to this Friday’s edition of The 8:01
This week we cover:
Hidden speakeasy’s in Chinatown
Birthday celebrations at the Bull’s Head
Have you continued to ride a Lime bike
It’s time to pick some grapes
I had a train failure this week. With only a few minutes spare, I jumped straight onto the train sitting on Platform 6, assuming it was my train bound for home. It wasn’t. It was, in fact, a slightly delayed Dartford train, meaning I had to get off at Eltham and get the 314 back to Chislehurst.
In Town
Opium, China Town
Not too much of a walk from Charing Cross will take you up to China Town, which is always a very vibrant location, with both locals and tourists. On first glance the area is entirely dominated by restaurants, but if you look closely you’ll notice an unassuming doorway that leads you up to Opium. Expect to find delicious cocktails set in the style of 19th Century ‘Opium Den’ era of China.
I advise making a reservation.

It’s more welcoming inside.

Curious about launching your own newsletter? I can highly recommend beehiiv which is a powerful platform built for growth, trusted by some of the world’s top creators. IN fact, it’s the very platform that I use to create The 8:01.
At Home
The Bull’s Head, Royal Parade
Yesterday, (September 18th) was Young’s 194th birthday, so it felt right at the time of writing that I should feature the Bull’s Head in this weeks newsletter. A grade II listed building that dates back to the 1750s, originally had just the two bars, but has since added a third and is now also a hotel and event venue. The snug is my personal favourite in the winter, and of course the large garden at the back in the summer.
The Commute
Great to have the tube fully back up and running. Makes life so much easier. I’m curious to hear though if anyone took a Lime back to get around, have you considered making this a more permanent part of your commute?
Heard on the Platform
This is a pivotal time of year for the wine industry at it’s harvest, and many vineyards have opportunities to get involved. Personally, I’ll be heading down to Ham Street Wines next week to help pick those delicious grapes. It’s a good chance to be active in the countryside, learn more about the industry and very possibly enjoy a few samples.
