Our Culture, Clarified—Every Week

Every week, 1440 hands knowledge-seekers a guided tour through a single social current. We stitch together history, data, and expert voices so you don’t just witness change—you understand it. One concise, fact-first read turns surface headlines into the deeper “why” that satisfies your curiosity and keeps your worldview expanding.

The Big Lunch

Alongside the Rotary Club Summer Fair, this Saturday will also see the Big Lunch again on the Common. The Big Lunch is a national event, created by Eden Project Communities with many communities across the country getting together to have a shared lunch in their neighbourhood.

It also forms a key event during June’s Month of Community where the purpose is to “connect with neighbours, welcome refugees, support carers, raise awareness of loneliness or simply to say thank you.” Which in these current times is a positive ambition.

In Town

Music has often been a key component of visiting a bar, but in recent years, a number of venues have placed their entire focus on it. Known as ‘listening bars’ inspired by Japanese "jazz kissa" (jazz cafes), they typically feature large vinyl collections, state-of-the-art audiophile equipment, and a curated atmosphere primarily designed to enjoy the music.

Given the current struggles that pubs and bars are facing, creating a more immersive experience to get customers through the doors can only be a good thing.

Within easy reach of Chislehurst is Nine Lives, located in a Victorian basement just off Bermondsey Street. Nine Lives offers a range of delicious cocktails crafted by their bar team and tasty seasonal tacos with Southern California flavours. A key feature of Nine Lives is its custom-built quadraphonic sound system, consisting of four WR 322 full-range speakers, which highlights the emphasis on the music.

Not quite as easy to get to, but if you want to explore, there is also Jazu on Deptford High Street.
