Hello, {{ Fname | reader }}!
Welcome to this Friday’s edition of The 8:01
This week we cover:
Pubs running workshops
Irish Pubs in Covent Garden
Excellent Thai food at Giggling Squid
It’s a humid commute right now
Could driverless taxis be coming to Chislehurst?
This week I noticed that the Bickley Arms will be hosting a couple of workshops for Halloween (pumpkin carving) and Christmas (wreath making). Considering the difficult market all pubs are facing, I think it’s a great idea to extend the use of these venues to get more people through the door. This contrasts with the news last week that the government is thinking of extending licensing hours, where it’s thought this could increase anti-social behaviour. So the thought if pubs generating more money earlier in the day, rather than at the end of it, is possibly more neighbourhood friendly.
In Town
The Porterhouse, Maiden Lane
First off, this is a huge pub. Spread over three floors with a number of different areas and rooms, The Porterhouse is a vast pub. It’s actually a sister location to the original venue based in Dublin, (which I have also been to and seem to remember it being a great place too.) Despite the Irish vibes, you won’t find any Guinness here, but there are Porterhouse Porters and Stouts on offer.

At Home
Giggling Squid, High Street
We do have a pretty good range of cuisine up on the High Street, and Giggling Squid ensures we’re covered for delicious Thai food. The first restaurant opened in Brighton in 2002, and the company has since expanded to over 47 locations across the UK. With a range of signature cocktails, and a options for children, they pretty much have something for everyone.
The Commute
It’s that horrid time of year when the train companies have decided to whack the heat on full blast without it being too cold outside. Add in some sort of walk when you get to London, and you end up arriving at the office in humid mess. Is it wrong to wish for cooler weather?
Heard on the Platform
AI and robotics sure are taking over the world. There’s a strong rumour that driverless taxis might be headed to London. US firm Waymo, has been running driverless cabs for a number of years, and are now looking to expand over here. Whether they will ever come as far out to Chislehurst who know’s, but are we really ready of them?
