What a Scorcher
I don’t need to tell you it’s been hot this past week. I took a reading on the patio, and the temperature peaked at 34.2°, which is far too hot for us Brits. We’re just not used to it. I had a call with someone in Madrid, who told me the temperature there was nearly 45°, but they quickly pointed out that with our greater humidity, the heat must be vile in the UK. It’s also not common for us to have air conditioning at home, making it an interesting choice whether to face an inhumane train journey to the city, but with a cool office, or sweat away at home. I took a train from Bickley late Sunday afternoon, and the physical hit from the heat inside the carriage was unbearable.
The Ponds are Drying Up
All of this heat is having a visible impact on the ponds. Keepers and volunteers of Chislehurst Commons have been doing some fine work looking after the nature that call the ponds home. But it’s not just the past week that’s been dry; we’ve had a long, unseasonable dry spell for many months now, and it doesn’t appear that this will change significantly anytime soon.
Glebe’s New 3G Pitch
This weather also highlights the advantage of Glebe FC's new 3G pitch. Being artificial and not real grass, it should be far more tolerant to extreme weather, meaning fewer cancelled games, more playing time, and happier players. Glebe is also looking for new players, and with a new stadium and pitch, the 2025/2026 season might just be the time to start.

In Town
Given the recent heat, you might be dreaming of a dip in a swimming pool, but what about the highest outdoor pool in London? Located on the 27th floor of Shard Place, this is London’s highest pool. It sits within the Shard Quarter near London Bridge and is exclusively reserved for the tower’s residents.
