Hello, {{ Fname | reader }}!
Welcome to this Friday’s edition of The 8:01
This week we cover:
There’s water in the pond (for now)
The sun is good for our beer gardens
The Tigers Head has a new GM
We’re Definitely Having a Good Spell of Weather
It's been another hot week here in Chislehurst. Yesterday afternoon, I made a bad decision to walk around the vineyard at Balfour Winery in 29° heat. When I completed the loop, I certainly felt like I needed something cold, fizzy, and refreshing.
We did get some rain last weekend, though, which was very much welcomed by those of us monitoring the water level in Prickend Pond. Steve Grime's photo below shows the level has increased, but considering the temperature has risen again and full sun is expected next week, this must only be a temporary reprise.
But all this weather is good for our local pubs. We're blessed with some decent beer gardens in the area, thinking particularly of The Bickley Arms, The Crown, The Bulls Head and The Tigers Head. Talking of the Tigers Head, they have a new General Manager, Jordan. I have already read some comments that he's hoping to bring a good vibe back to the pub. As someone else had commented, it has felt more like a restaurant in recent years. This weekend might be a great time to go down and say hello.

In Town
If sitting still in a bar talking and drinking isn’t enough for you, then you might enjoy Roxy Ballroom, which can almost be described as an adult playground. It is not dissimilar in concept to Sixes, which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, but instead of focusing entirely on one activity, Roxy Ballroom has umpteen of them: pool, bowling, shuffleboard, table tennis, even curling!
This is the first venue in the South of England for owners, Professionals at Play, and opened up in April earlier this year. I used to work near here, with the venue being opposite the Gherkin. It’s also in a basement, so it might be perfect for a scorching summer’s day.
